Publishing & Rights
Copyright protection, publisher partnerships, territorial rights, and distribution.
What copyright protection options are available?
Vwaza Studio offers two main paths: COSOMA registration for copyright protection in Malawi, and working with publishers for broader rights management and international licensing.
What is COSOMA and how does it work?
COSOMA (Copyright Society of Malawi) is the national organization that manages copyright and neighboring rights. Through Vwaza Studio, you can submit your music directly for COSOMA registration, which protects your work and enables royalty collection in Malawi.
What does a publisher do?
Publishers handle rights management, royalty collection, international licensing, and copyright administration for your music. They work to place your music in films, ads, and other media (sync deals) and collect royalties from various sources.
How do territorial rights work?
You can control where your content is available using territory management. Set content to worldwide, include only specific countries, or exclude certain regions. This is useful for managing licensing deals that cover specific territories.
Can I work with multiple publishers?
Yes, depending on your agreements. Some publishers work on a territory-by-territory basis, while others may have worldwide deals. Ensure your publishing agreements don't conflict before signing with multiple publishers.
How are publishing royalties different from streaming revenue?
Streaming revenue comes from plays on Vwaza platforms (you keep 80%). Publishing royalties are collected by publishers from external uses of your music - sync placements, radio play, live performances, and mechanical reproductions.
Do I need a publisher to use Vwaza Studio?
No. You can upload, distribute, and monetize your content without a publisher. Publishers are optional and primarily useful for creators seeking sync opportunities, international royalty collection, and professional rights management.
How do I submit my music to COSOMA through Vwaza Studio?
Navigate to your content, select the track or album, and use the COSOMA Submission option. Fill in the required details about composition, authorship, and rights holders. The submission is sent directly to COSOMA for processing.
What happens after I publish my content?
Published content becomes available on the Vwaza platforms you selected (Music, TV, Podcasts). It appears in search results, recommendations, and your artist profile. Analytics tracking begins immediately.
